Aquarium Drunkard Presents: Independence Day

If "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave", then Los Angeles is feeling it. No matter your plans for the (long) Fourth of July weekend, this week's playlist is aimed to cool you down.

Twenty one tracks kicking off with two from Ike & Tina -- two of my favorites that demonstrate their collective, if volatile, power. While I would never go so far as to say that Johnny Jenkins one ups Dr. John at his own game, his take on the doctor's "Walk On Guilded Splinters" is indeed one to be reckoned with. Same goes for Odetta's rendering of Dylan's "Baby I'm In The Mood For You." Savvy eyeballs will note Ramsay Midwood's "Spinnin' On This Rock" is the one 21st century track included, though sonically, and aesthetically, you'd be hard pressed to place it anywhere beyond 1972. So press play. I won't give the rest away, save that The Soul Lifters "Hot, Funky & Sweaty" pretty much sums up the vibe here. Stay cool out there. Happy birthday, America. - AD
