In Stores Tomorrow: Lee Morgan, THE ROULETTE SIDES 10”

If you know your jazz, then you probably know the name “Lee Morgan.” If you don’t know his name, then now’s the time to learn.

Morgan was one of the greatest trumpeters ever to play the instrument, and he found his first fame at the ripe young age of 18, when he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s band. Gillespie proved to be one of his Morgan’s major musical influences, as were Clifford Brown and Fats Navarro, but this was only one stop on Morgan’s path. Two years later, he was a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and two years after that he’d entered the studio to record some material of his own.

With the new documentary I Called Him Morgan on the horizon, Rhino is reissuing the three tracks that Morgan recorded in June 1960, which were subsequently released on the 1962 compilation BEST OF BIRDLAND: VOL. 1.  These three sides are available in Mono Vinyl 33 1/3 rpm for the first time since the 1970s, cut straight to lacquer from the original production masters.

If you’re a jazz fan, you’ll want to pick this up immediately. If you’re not a jazz fan yet, this just might make you one.
