On March 21, a new musical will be opening on London’s West End – at the Aldwych Theater, to be precise – which will offer up some seriously spectacular soul music, and it’s giving us an opportunity to shine the spotlight on a true icon in our catalog: Tina Turner.

TINA: The Musical stars Adrienne Warren, who made her Broadway debut in 2012 with Bring It On and then followed it with her Tony-nominated performance in Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. Warren has proven herself up to the challenge of playing someone as iconic as Tina Turner, but she was apparently hugely intimidated at the thought of actually meeting Turner, an encounter which took place at a workshop performance of the musical.

“My heart’s beating fast just thinking about it,” Warren told Billboard. “I didn’t want to meet her before the actual performance, and I didn’t actually look at her until I got to ‘Proud Mary.’ And she was just singing along with me. My heart could have exploded.”

And lest you be concerned, Tina wasn’t just being polite: at an event to launch the musical, she said of Warren, ““From the moment I met her… I saw her exceptional talent.”

Of course, if you’re not in the UK, then you won’t be in a position to catch TINA: The Musical quite yet, which is unfortunately. The good news, however, is that you can still listen to the real thing whenever you want. In fact, why not listen to a little bit right now?

Yes, “What’s Love Got To Do With It” is the signature song from Turner’s comeback in the ‘80s, but TINA: The Musical will be offering up selections from throughout her career. As such, after you’ve given the aforementioned track a spin, you might as well give her greatest-hits collection a spin. After all, it’s… SIMPLY THE BEST.
