Now Available: Phil Collins, No Jacket Required / Testify – Deluxe Editions

In February, Phil Collins began the process of giving his fans a gift that’s been 35 years in the making: the deluxe reissuing and remastering of his back catalog of solo albums. Inevitably, the first round of reissues kicked off with the album that’s hitting the big 3-5 this year, 1981’s Face Value, but it was released simultaneously with 1993’s Both Sides. Last month brought 1982’s Hello, I Must Be Going! and 1996’s Dance into the Light.

Today kicks off round three, and – déjà vu! – the offerings will be just as exciting for fans as the first two bunches have proven to be.

No Jacket Required: If ever there was a Phil Collins album that didn’t particularly require much in the way of reminders about its contents, it’s got to be this one, which has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Still, we’ve got a job to do, so we’ll go ahead and do it: you’ll remember this album, which was Phil’s third, for its singles “One More Night,” “Sussudio,” “Don’t Lose My Number,” and “Take Me Home.” Statistically speaking, if you’ve got a Phil Collins studio album, it’s probably this one. And it still holds up.

Testify: Conversely, this is the Phil Collins studio album you’re least likely to have heard, at least in terms of his studio albums that feature predominantly original material. And make no mistake: the key word here is “original,” as Testify found Collins delving into sounds and styles that he hadn’t explored before. You may be surprised to find that a few songs do sound familiar, particularly “Can’t Stop Loving You,” which was an Adult Contemporary hit, but overall it flew under the radar to some extent when it was released in 2002. Then again, that means that it’s arguably the best reissue of the bunch to experience in 2016, since it may well feel like a completely new album to you.
