Once Upon a Time in the Top Spot: Fleetwood Mac, Rumours
38 years ago today, the defining album of Fleetwood Mac's '70s output - and if we're to be honest, one of the defining albums of the '70s, period - found its way to the top of the Billboard Top 200.
Released on February 4, 1977, Rumours is one of those albums that's become so ingrained in the public consciousness that a cursory spin of just about any of the record's 12 tracks would result in the average person between the ages of 40 and 60 (and quite a few others on either end of that spectrum) saying, “Oh, I know that song.”
Of course they know that song: there's virtually no one who doesn't know the four-pack of singles from the album - “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don't Stop,” and “You Make Loving Fun” - and the others have been played so much on album rock radio over the decades that it feels like they were singles, too.
To celebrate the anniversary of Rumours hitting #1, we're naturally going to present the album in its entirety - it is a classic, after all - but after you finish listening to that, stay tuned, because we're also presenting covers of all 12 songs, tackled by artists ranging from Whiskeytown to Tantric to the cast of Glee.
If those three artists alone don't give you an idea of how far and wide the influence of Rumours has spread, don't worry, there are still nine more to get you the rest of the way.
