Out Now: The Replacements, FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S

Way back yonder in February 1986, The Replacements arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey, took the stage of Maxwell’s, and raged against…something. Not necessarily the dying of the light – that seems a little overly poetic for the ‘Mats – but you know how it was with those guys when they were in their heyday: if you’d asked them what they were raging against, they probably would’ve just pulled a Brando and sneered, “Whaddaya got?”

That’s why The Replacements were legends. It’s also why people have been champing at the bit for the release of FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S.

When the ‘Mats took the stage of Maxwell’s on that February evening, a 24-track mobile studio was on hand to record the band’s 29-song performance, one which featured tracks from all of the band’s albums up to that point along with a healthy dose of B-sides and cover songs. Although bootlegs of dodgy sound quality have slipped out over the years, this is the first time the official recording of that performance has ever been released, and if you’re a ‘Mats fan, then you’d best believe that it’s worth the wait.

FOR SALE: LIVE AT MAXWELL’S 1986 is available now as a two-disc set and a double-LP as well as on digital download and streaming services, and it features new liner notes from Bob Mehr, author of the New York Times bestseller Trouble Boys: The True Story Of The Replacements, as well as never-before-seen photos from the Maxwell’s show by noted music writer and photographer Caryn Rose.
